Crash Involving Fuel Tanker Closes Route 3 In Billerica [UPDATE]

A rolled-over tanker carrying several thousand gallons of fuel crashed, leading to a road closure that has stretched into the afternoon.

BILLERICA, MA — A multiple-vehicle crash including a rolled-over tanker carrying several thousand gallons of fuel has closed both directions of Route 3 in Billerica.

All lanes are closed in both directions as of 1 p.m., according to state police. There's no estimated time of completion.

The accident occurred around 10 a.m. Wednesday southbound on Route 3 near exit 76.

Detours are in place at exit 76 northbound and exit 79 southbound.

MassDOT said drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.

State police updated the situation around 11 a.m.: "Tanker is leaking fuel from top of tank. Hazmat and environmental response ongoing. Lane closures remain in place for foreseeable future."

Police said that clean up was still going on in the afternoon. The driver of the tanker and the driver of one of the other vehicles involved sustained minor injuries, according to police.

The other vehicles involved were a 2022 GMC Sierra pickup and a 2022 Tesla Model Y SUV. Much of the load of fuel the tanker was carrying has spilled, police said.
