WILMINGTON, MA — Forty-three officers from the Wilmington Police Department completed interactive, scenario-based training with the Middlesex Sheriff's Office (MSO) last month, the Wilmington PD and MSO have announced.

The training was conducted from Sept. 26-30 in Wilmington using the MSO's Mobile Training Center (MTC).

According to the MSO, the sessions included a series of video-based scenarios that focused on the use of de-escalation skills, along with responses to disturbances and active shooter incidents.

Wilmington PD trainers and officers discussed and assessed the officers' responses after every training scenario.

"We are grateful to have the opportunity for such advanced training through the Middlesex Sheriff's Office," Wilmington Police Chief Joseph Desmond said. "The scenario-based technology gives our officers the ability to combine all aspects of their training in real-world situations which is often difficult to replicate in traditional training environments."

Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said his office regularly facilitates training for law enforcement agencies across the county in order to enhance public safety.

"By working with Chief Desmond to facilitate this interactive, scenario-based training, we are helping officers in Wilmington — and many other communities — reinforce skills and techniques that are critical to effective policing, particularly around communication and de-escalation," Koutoujian said.
