WILMINGTON, MA —Applications are now available for young people between the ages of 14 and 20 who are interested in joining the Wilmington Police Explorers program.

The career-oriented Explorers program gives participants a chance to learn about a career in law enforcement by working with officers from the Wilmington Police Department.

Applications are available online, and must be submitted by Sept. 11. Applicants are subject to background checks and must be in good academic standing. Wilmington residents will be given preference during the application process, said the WPD.

"The program is open to young people who are responsible, motivated and eager to give back to the community," the Wilmington Police Department said in a statement.

According to the department, Explorers will go through police training and fitness programs and have community service opportunities that give them practical experience in law enforcement.

During the year-round program, Explorers will participate in WPD and town functions and work with community organizations, schools and other town departments, according to the police department.

The WPD said that Explorers are encouraged to stay in the program until their 21st birthday, and participation in the program may be taken into consideration during the police officer hiring process.

The Town of Wilmington also will sponsor any active Explorer who chooses to send themselves through the MPTC Police Academy, though Explorers are responsible for the costs associated with the academy, according to officials.
