WILMINGTON, MA — Health officials at Wilmington Public Schools are warning parents about a popular new energy drink they say contains unhealthy levels of caffeine for children.

In a passage in the North Intermediate School newsletter released last week, Rebecca Brown, coordinator of health services for WPS, said the district is seeing an increase in the consumption of all energy drinks. However, she singled out Prime Energy as "not suitable for children under the age of 18."

"The phrasing of 'energy drink' makes it sound like a healthy option, especially for active kids. But the truth is the caffeine level (in Prime Energy) is extremely high (200 mg)," Brown wrote. "That caffeine level is not even safe for teenagers. Caffeine can lead to harmful side effects including dehydration, heart complications, feelings of anxiety and insomnia."

Brown recommends that parents send their children to school with a bottle of water each day and that the kids avoid energy-type drinks, but especially Prime Energy.

Prime Energy was released early this year by the Prime, a beverage brand founded by entrepreneurs and influencers Logan Paul and KSI.

A year earlier, the company launched Prime Hydration, which also is an energy drink, but according to Dejittr.com, does not contain any caffeine.

If parents have any questions about energy drinks being consumed in schools they are asked to contact the nurse at their children's school.
