MA Weather Outlook: Chance Of Snow, But Lots Of Rain

Tuesday night is guaranteed to be a wet one, but forecasters are also eyeing our first snow of the season this weekend.

Tuesday night is a good night if you enjoy falling asleep to the pitter-patter of rain. A few spotty showers will ready us for it to come down steady and heavy tonight, forecasters are warning. Most areas can expect roughly an inch of rain across the state, with some higher totals in Southeastern Mass.

Tonight's weather is prompting a hazardous weather outlook for most of Massachusetts and a coastal flood advisory from the Cape to New Hampshire. A wind advisory is also being considered, the National Weather Advisory said, as forecasters are warning of some very strong winds tonight. Gusts between 30-50 miles per hour may bring with them the threat of isolated power outages.

The rain will be hit or miss from about noon-7 p.m. It begins to fall in earnest after that, and is expected to persist well into Wednesday morning.

So with all this rain, what about the chance of December snow? It's being discussed for later this week, but today's temperatures will remain too mild with highs topping 50.

The National Weather Service says there is too much uncertainty to tell if we will see the season's first snowfall this weekend, but it's possible.

"A period or two of rain and/or accumulating snow exists Friday into the weekend if a couple waves of low pressure track close enough to the coast," the NWS wrote.

The weekend weather system will either track up into New England or out into the Atlantic.

"A storm that tracks close to the coast and gains only a moderate amount of strength would be successful at bringing a stripe of accumulating snow from New York City to Boston and perhaps as far to the southwest at Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.,"AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams said.
