Winchester Residents Building Beds for Kids Growing in Poverty

The First Congregational Church in Winchester's parishioners volunteered to help build 12 twin bed frames for children living in poverty.

“A Bed for Every Child’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and we see childhood education as a crucial starting point for that goal,” said Robyn Frost, Executive Director for the MA Coalition for the Homeless. “We want every child, regardless of their family’s financial situation, to receive a good education and that starts with a good night’s sleep. We hope that this event with First Congregational Church in Winchester raises awareness about families experiencing poverty and inspires others to volunteer for and donate to this important initiative.”

A Bed for Every Child launched the Build a Bed Project to bring together sponsored teams of people to help meet the growing need for beds. A bed may not seem like the most pressing social issue facing kids growing up in poverty, yet thousands of children across Massachusetts are without a bed of their own. the reason is simply that their parents are unable to afford one.

About A Bed for Every Child

A Bed for Every Child was launched in 2012 when a public school teacher asked for help to get beds for her students. What she was witnessing was the same as hundreds of other teachers across our state teaching in communities, students coming to school tired and unfocused because they were lacking one of life’s most important physical and mental factors: healthy sleep. A Bed for Every Child provides beds for children living in poverty without one of their own.
