WOBURN, MA — Police said they have seen a large increase in construction scams.

"Many of these scams involve a work crew going door to door indicating they are in the area doing work," police wrote in a Facebook post. "They will offer to do construction type work at what they say is a discounted rate. The work usually related to driveway paving, masonry, and chimney repair. These individuals will require money upfront as a deposit. They will either not show up again taking the money or show up for a day and begin work. They will then require the rest of the money to complete the job which usually does not happen. If the work is done the work is shoddy at best and the price of the job is well over the going rate."

Police advised against hiring any person or company without researching them first. They said it's best to look into the company and never agree to have any work done if someone just shows up at your door.

Door-to-door solicitors are required to register with the city.

"Don’t fall victim on one of these scams, if something doesn’t seem right it usually isn’t," police wrote. "If you suspect these scammers are at your residence call the police department. Many of these scammers target the elderly so talk to those individuals you know to make them aware."
