Woburn's Shamrock Elementary School Holds Literacy Luau

The event was designed to get students and parents excited about reading. It featured pizza, dessert and games, like Bingo for Books.

WOBURN, MA — Woburn's Shamrock Elementary School hosted a Literacy Luau last month to help students and their families get excited about reading.

More than 200 people attended the April 12 event at the school, which has Grades K-5. The luau featured pizza, dessert and reading-related activities, including Bingo for Books.

The event was sponsored by the school's Title I Department, which works to help students meet the state content and performance standards in reading, language arts and math.

"The literacy luau was an outstanding success," Shamrock Principal Wayne Clark said. "Seeing the students get excited about reading was wonderful, especially since families were also able to get involved."

Clark continued: "A special thank you to Title I teacher Candace Chillemi and the amazing Shamrock staff, who volunteered their time to serve food, run bingo, plan and teach all the activities for the evening. The event ShamRocked!"
