ISLE ROYALE, MI — A 37-year-old woman died Monday while hiking at Isle Royale National Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, according to park officials.

Officials said the Battle Creek woman was hiking with her partner near Lake LeSage during the afternoon hours when she had "sudden onset medical complications."

Her condition deteriorated and couldn't walk, and eventually lost consciousness and stopped breathing, officials said.

Emergency park responders found the party on Monday evening and stayed with them until an Isle Royale staff crew transported them from a remote location early Tuesday, officials said.

Officials are still investigating the incident.

"The Isle Royale community extends their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," officials said.

The park is located 55 miles from the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula and has more than 165 miles of hiking trails. It is one of the most secluded places not just in Michigan, but in the entire country, and is only accessible by ferry or seaplane.
