15 Metro Detroit Events for Labor Day 2015

Royal Oak, Detroit, Novi host big marquee events, but there are lots of other ways to celebrate Labor Day. The Tigers are in town, too.

There are several big marquee events this Labor Day Weekend – Arts, Beats & Eats in Royal Oak, the world’s largest free Jazz Fest in Detroit and the the Fifth Third Bank State Fair in Novi – as well as small, family friendly festivals and events across the Detroit Metro.

Here are 15 ways to celebrate summer’s last hurrah.

The 36th annual Detroit Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival in the world, runs from Friday through Monday at Hart Plaza. You can read more about the Jazz Fest entertainment lineup here.

The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival takes place from Saturday through Labor Day. Find out more about the Hamtramck Labor Day festivities here.

The 2015 Metro Detroit AFL-CIO Laborfest parade and celebration takes place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday. The staging area for the parade is in the area of Michigan and Trumbull, with celebrations following at the UAW-Ford National Programs Center, 151 W. Jefferson Ave., Detroit. The Third Fifth Bank Michigan State Fair takes place Friday through Monday. You can read more about the state fair here.

The Michigan Peach Festival, featuring a midway, entertainment, nightly parades and other typical festival events, opened Thursday in Romeo and continues through Labor Day. You can find out more about the peach festival here.

South Lyon has it’s own Labor Day Bridge Walk on Monday, with an all-ages event on Huron Valley Trail through downtown. The event is one of several held in conjunction with the 58th Annual Mackinac Bridge Labor Day walk. Find more about bridge walk activities in South Lyon here. New Baltimore Art on the Bay runs Saturday and Sunday at Walter & Mary Burke Park in downtown New Baltimore. Ogle art, sample food from local businesses and listen to live music with Lake St. Clair as a backdrop. Learn more about the fine arts and craft show here.

Monday is Target Family Day at the Henry Ford Museum, meaning admission and parking are both free from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. This is a great chance to soak up some history at museum, located at 20900 Oakwood Blvd. in Dearborn. You can learn more about the free-admission day at The Henry Ford here.

The 71st annual Labor Day Roundup in Downtown Franklin takes place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday. Highlights include the seasonal opening of Franklin Cider Mill, a parade, midway games, classic car show, special dog adoption event, LEGO City and an appearance by the Detroit Tigers mascot, PAWS. A companion event is Art in the Village, which takes place in Franklin village between 13 and 14 Mile roads, also from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday. The Detroit Tigers are in town, hosting a three-game stand against the Cleveland Indians Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Comerica Park. It’s the “Gloves for Kids Weekend of Giving,” and the Tigers will be accepting donations of new gently used baseball or softball equipment. Collection bins will be located outside Gate A near the big tiger statue, and donations will be accepted two hours prior to game time through the second inning.
