Carson’s Liquidation Sales Start Friday

Carson's department store is liquidating its stock after announcing it would permanently close this summer.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — Carson’s department store will begin liquidating its stock on Friday as it prepares to permanently close this summer. All of the stores, including those in Clinton Township, Livonia and Rochester Hills, are expected to close by August.

The liquidation comes after Carson’s parent company, Bon-Ton Stores, failed to find a bidder to keep the business afloat and two liquidation firms became the highest bidders at an auction for the company’s assets.

“The company is committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact on associates, customers, vendors and the communities we serve,” the company said in a statement.

The Macomb Daily reported that the Partridge Creek location was still profitable.

“When we were told this on Tuesday, we were devastated,” one long-time worker at the Patridge Creek location told the Macomb Daily. “We knew it was coming, but we held out hope.”

Bon-Ton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, citing debt and sinking sales. It has about 250 stores under various titles in 23 states and about 23,000 employees. The Clinton Township, Livonia and Rochester Hills add up to more than 500 jobs.
