Clinton Township Officials to Vote on $14 Million Housing Project

The project would build a subsidized senior and low-income housing complex near 15 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — Officials will vote Monday whether to pass a $14 million project that would demolish the public housing complex near 15 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, and build a subsidized senior and low-income housing complex in it's place.

This development is part of a Neighborhood Revitalization Plan for the town's southeast quadrant. The plan outlines various future installments for the area, including transportation and infrastructure, according to The Macomb Daily.

Officials hope these new additions will spur further economic development in the area.

Throughout the past two years, the Clinton Township Housing Commission made plans to tear down the 100-unit public housing on Village Road, including the one- and two-story townhouse residences.

The housing complex was first constructed in the late 1960s and was completely full of residents in 1970.

“It’s going to be wonderful if it all comes together,” said Gerald Burnosky, chairman of the five-member commission to The Macomb Daily. “The units are outdated -- the facility has lived its life. It’s time for something new for the people there.”

The first phase of the project will include constructing a 50-unit senior housing structure to take the place of the existing housing complex. Residents can move in once this is completed. Then, low-rise family and senior units will be built.

While many people are excited for the project, some think Clinton Township doesn't need more public housing.

“I think the new facility will definitely improve the quality of life for the residents who live there, but I am opposed to any additional public housing,” said Township Supervisor Robert Cannon in The Macomb Daily article. “Clinton Township has its fair share of public housing in Macomb County.”

The township Board of Trustees will vote on the Clinton Village housing plan and the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
