Harrison Township Library October Book Club Review

Not Fans of Horror Fiction

(Harrison Township Public Library)

In October, the Harrison Township Public Library selected The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. It’s a story about a book club that goes off the rails when a vampire moves into town.

We all agreed that this was a unique book which defied our expectations, but it was met with lukewarm reviews by our book club. One of the biggest drawbacks was that there was a lot of extra content that didn’t really move the story forward. Plot lines that were introduced early went unmentioned later on in the book. The author’s depiction of the South was fun to read, leading some of us to say that we would have preferred a realistic, non-supernatural story, but set in the same place.

We couldn’t vision it as a film but we could easily see this book as a television series. There were enough interesting characters and subplots to provide a few seasons’ worth of material!

Verdict: As a group of non-horror readers, we don’t see ourselves reading a sequel (if there is one in the future). Instead, for a supernatural book, some of our members recommended Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witch series. We were also reminded of the TV series True Blood.
