Kmart in Clinton Township to Close: Liquidation Sale Dates

Store closings part of Sears Holdings' strategy to overcome declining revenues and billions of dollars in losses.

Clinton Township, MI — The Kmart store in Clinton Township will shutter in mid-October as part of a huge downsizing that is fraying the discount chain’s Michigan roots.

Sears Holdings spokesman Howard Riefs confirmed the Kmart store at 34800 Groesbeck Highway is closing, The Macomb Daily reported.

Final liquidation sales begin July 28 and normal store hours will continue until the final day.

Employees, most of them part-time or hourly works, will be eligible for a severance package, Riefs said, declining to tell the newspaper how many workers are affected.

Sears previously said it was closing the Kmarts in Farmington Hills, Taylor and Houghton Lake this month. Stores in Ft. Gratiot Township and Iron Wood have already closed as the struggling retailer tries to overcome declining revenues and billions of dollars in losses.

In two rounds of closures, Sears has said it will shutter more than 200 stores.

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs told The Macomb Daily.

Kmart has deep roots in Michigan. It founded by Sebastian Spering Kresge in Detroit in 1899, and became one of America’s largest retailers. The Troy-based chain filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 22, 2002, and merged with Sears in 2005.
