Free family event offers fun and exciting STEM discovery for kids

Macomb Community College will hold the Great Pumpkin Fest, a fun event for the whole family, Saturday, Oct. 16, 12 – 4 p.m. at the Sports and Expo Center on Macomb’s South Campus in Warren.

The event is free and features activities for all ages including performances by Mad Science of Detroit, discovery stations with engaging activities based on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts, a fleet of food trucks, cider and donuts, music and country line dancing featuring the college’s show choir --the Macombers, and a fall market with corn stalks, pumpkins, mums and hay bales. There will also be a number of raffles, including a 50/50, with proceeds benefiting the Macomb Student Immediate Relief Fund, which provides emergency assistance to students struggling to continue at Macomb due to financial hardship.

“Fall is a great time to get together and enjoy Michigan’s harvest season,” said Christina Ayar, director, Macomb Community College Foundation. “The Great Pumpkin Fest is meant to bring the family together for an afternoon of fall fun, highlighted by learning new and exciting things through hands-on discovery stations and Mad Science performances.”

Mad Science of Detroit introduces and explains STEM concepts through entertaining, youth-oriented scientific experiments. The Fire and Ice show includes foggy dry ice storms, shivering scissors, bubbly showers and demonstrates how giant beach balls can float in midair. Volunteers from the audience will also get a chance to taste a special “burp” potion. The Mad Science showtimes are 12:30 and 2 p.m. with general seating.

The Great Pumpkin Fest is presented by First State Bank. Participation by Mad Science of Detroit is underwritten by a grant from the Foren Family Foundation.
