Macomb County Man Fatally Shoots Mother, Injures Brother: Police

Police said the shooting happened over Fourth of July weekend inside a Clinton Township home.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A Clinton Township man is facing life in prison after fatally shooting his mother and wounding his brother over the Fourth of July weekend, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

Officers found Yolanda Cook, 49, shot to death and her 31-year-old son suffering from gunshot wounds inside a home on the 36000 block of Harper Avenue in Clinton Township at 4:54 p.m. on July 5, according to the prosecutor's office.

The 31-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was placed on life support, according to the prosecutor's office.

Corey Deyshaun Cook, 24, was charged with first degree premeditated murder (life felony without parole), two counts of felony firearm (two year mandatory felonies) and assault with intent to murder (life felony).

He was placed in the county jail and given a $1 million bond. His next court date is scheduled for July 2.

Prosecutors said Corey went to the Clinton Township Police Department after the shooting and told officers that he had shot two people.

Police held Cook at the department while officers found the bodies of the two family members during a welfare check, according to the prosecutor's office.

"Our office is committed to seeking justice for the victims and their family. We will ensure that the accused is held fully accountable for this alleged premeditated act of violence," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.
