Metro Detroit on Track for 6 Inches of Snow from Strong Storm

Snowstorm expected to hit Detroit area by Wednesday may start with tornadoes and hail in the South, thunderstorms along Eastern Seaboard.

METRO DETROIT, MI – So long, unseasonably mild winter weather. Metro Detroit could get more than 6 inches of snow by Thursday from a powerful storm system that could cause tornados and hail in the southern U.S. early this week and thunderstorms up the Eastern Seaboard Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rain on Wednesday is expected to traansition to snow overnight Wednesday in Metro Detroit, Weather.com said.

A large swatch from Grand Rapids to the Michigan Thumb area is expected to get up to a foot of snow, but the exact placement of heavier bands of snow could change.

Strong winds are also expected to develop, which may sharply reduce visibility during in some areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the Detroit Metro area for Wednesday and Thursday, when the snow is expected to taper off.

Here’s the Metro Detroit forecast for the rest of the week from the National Weather Service:

Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24; east wind around 7 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 39; east northeast wind 6 to 8 mph.

Tuesday night: A chance of rain and snow after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. Northeast wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Wednesday: A chance of rain and snow before 8 a.m., then rain; high near 37; breezy, with a northeast wind 11 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Wednesday night: Rain before 8 p.m, then snow; low around 32; breezy, with a north northeast wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent; new snow accumulation of around 3 inches.

Thursday: Snow, mainly before 2 p.m.; high near 34; breezy. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent; new snow accumulation of around 2 inches.

Thursday night: A chance of snow before 8 p.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 20. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 30.

Friday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 38. Breezy.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32.

Sunday night: A chance of snow showers; mostly cloudy, with a low around 19.

Monday: A chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 30.
