Southeast Michigan Communities Among '100 Safest Cities in America'

Security company analyzed FBI crime statistics, its own research and local data to come up with list.

Three southeast Michigan communities were named to 2015 lit of the “ 100 Safest Cities in America” compiled by the security company Safewise.

The rankings are based on the most recent FBI crime statistics from all over the nation, paired with the company’s own research highlighting each city’s public safety, public health and educational information.

Hibbing, MN, came in first in the ranking. The southeast Michigan communities, and the reasons for their section, follow:

31. Grosse Ile Township

This Detroit suburb is the biggest island on the Detroit River (in French, Grosse Ile means “big island”). With an amazingly high amount of waterway traffic, the Grosse Ile Fire Department keeps the island safe with a special dive team solely dedicated to search and rescue.

86. Milford

Before it was a Detroit suburb, Milford developed a slew of mills and hydropower facilities, becoming one of the first cities ever to have electric lights. Its police now participate in the West Oakland Major Crime Task Force, which harnesses the power of regional police forces on cases such as homicide.

88. New Baltimore

North of Detroit, New Baltimore is an historic coastal resort city on majestic Lake St. Clair. Its police fight to keep the tranquility of the city with initiatives like the “Justin Mello ID Program,” in which children receive a free ID card and are registered with police, protecting the community from crimes against kids.
