Sweaty, Not Sweater, Weather on Tap for Early September

On Sept. 3, 1953, it was 100 degrees in Detroit. It may not get that hot this year, but don't put away summer clothes yet.

Some areas of Michigan may see their hottest early September temperatures in 60 years, especially during the latter part of next week – good news if you plan to spend Labor Day weekend at the beach.

Mark Torregrossa, chief meteorologist for MLive.com, said the heat wave should hit Thursday, Sept. 3, and continue through Monday, Sept. 7, which is Labor Day.

“All of the weather data has been consistently showing hot temperatures for the second half of next week,” Torregrossa wrote. “The first graphic above shows the projected high temperature from our U.S. computer model called the GFS. It’s the coolest of the models we look at. The European Medium Range Model (Euro) is even hotter, warming many spots into the mid-90s next Thursday.”

The last time Michigan saw searing early September temperatures was in 1953, like 2015, an El Niño year. Torregrossa said that may be a coincidence, but he plans to investigate further.
