Thousands Still Without Power After Huge Storm

About 15,000 Wayne County and 8,000 Oakland County DTE Energy customers were still without power Monday.

About 15,000 DTE Energy customers in Wayne County and another 8,000 Oakland County residents lost power Sunday as severe thunderstorms and winds as high as 65 mph swept across Michigan.

The center and right lanes of M-14 and I-275 were closed about 4:20 a.m. because of flooding, the Michigan Department of Transportation said, according to a story in the Detroit Free Press. About a foot of water had accumulated, according to reports

The rain fell more quickly – for example, the National Weather Service said the rain fell in Clinton Township at a rate of more than 2 inches in an hour – than storm drains could handle.

Also according to the National Weather Service, the winds blew down a 13-inch diameter tree in Wyandotte. Dearborn experienced 60 mph winds, and power lines were down in multiple locations in West Bloomfield. One-inch diameter hail was reported on Detroit’s west side.

DTE Energy showed scattered outages. The utility said estimates will be given later Monday on when customers should expect power to come back on. Also affected were about 6,000 customers in Livingston County and 3,000 in Washtenaw County.

At least one tornado was reported about 6:40 p.m. in Owendale, located in Huron County in upper region of Michigan’s Thumb area.There were no injuries, but the people who videotaped it had some harrowing moments.

Consumers Energy also reported customers are without power in its coverage area in the hard-hit northern regions of the Lower Peninsula.

In Traverse City, trees were toppled in the 70 mph winds, snapped limbs downed power lines, and recycling bins, portable toilets and other soda coolers blew through the streets, forcing organizers to cancel outdoor screenings for the Traverse City Film Festival, according to the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

A recreational vehicle overturned on the Mackinac Bridge, and the iconic suspension bridge was temporarily closed until the winds died down.
