Today is the 2015 Tax Deadline, and in Michigan that's Kind of Messed Up

Forget WalletHub snub: three things you need to know about extended post office hours, electronic income tax filings and federal extensions.

As you’re heading out the door with your 2014 income tax return today determined to meet the midnight filing deadline, you may have time to stop whether the folks at the personal finance site WalletHub are mean spirited.

But first things first. The moment of reckoning with the IRS is here, and the deadline to file is midnight tonight, and here are three things you really, really need to know:

  1. If you need every last second, find a post office with extended hours here – but because of the increase in electronic filings, don’t count on finding a post office that stays open until midnight. Your best bets are the Fort Street location in downtown Detroit, which will be open until 10 p.m., or offices in Redford (open until 9 p.m.) or Royal Oak (open until 7 p.m.), WWJ/CBS Detroit reports.

On Tuesday, just ahead of Tax Day, WalletHub today released an in-depth analysis of the U.S. tax landscape with its list of 2015’s Best & Worst Taxpayer Return on Investment.

Once again, Michigan gets no love in the analysis, which used 22 metrics to compare the quality and efficiency of state government services across six distinct categories – infrastructure, education, health, safety, economy and pollution.

The return-on-investment analysis took into account the drastically different rates at which citizens are taxed in each state. Here’s how Michigan ranked among U.S. states and the District of Columbia:

  • 46th – Overall ROI
  • 45th – Tax Rate
  • 46th – Infrastructure
  • 33rd – Education
  • 47th – Health
  • 26th – Safety
  • 39th – Economy
  • 11th – Pollution
