I-96, I-75 Wrong-Way Drunken Driver Arrested, No Injuries: Police

A suspected drunken driver was arrested early Sunday morning after driving the wrong way on multiple metro Detroit freeways, police said.

METRO DETROIT — A suspected drunken driver was arrested early Sunday morning after driving the wrong way on multiple metro Detroit freeways, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers first received calls at 3:30 a.m. of a wrong-way driver who was driving east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 96 between Evergreen and Southfield roads in Detroit, according to police.

As officers were sent to the area, troopers learned the driver was now speeding south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near Eureka Road in Taylor, according to police.

MDOT cameras picked up the vehicle as it crossed the Rouge River Bridge and troopers spotted the vehicle as it passed Allen Road, according to police.

Troopers were able to get ahead of the wrong-way driver and waited at a turnaround, according to police.

As the wrong-way driver passed officers, troopers used the PIT maneuver to stop the car, according to police.

The 23-year-old Dearborn Heights woman was arrested for impaired driving and being held, pending prosecutor review, according to police.

No one was injured in the incident and there were no crashes, according to police.

"We were extremely fortunate that this driver did not hit another driver head on," First Lt. Mike Shaw said. "Please remember do not get behind the wheel if you are impaired. There are way too many options available to get to your destination."
