DETROIT — Delta travelers en route from Amsterdam to Detroit had an unwelcome surprise when maggots fell from an overhead bin, forcing the plane to turn around, according to reports.

The incident occurred on Flight DL133 about an hour into the journey, when at least a dozen of the creatures fell onto a woman from inside a bag containing a rotten fish wrapped in newspaper, WJBK reported.

“My family and I were in the row directly in front of the maggots,” Reddit user nisha_16 wrote on the platform. “The lady right behind us told the flight attendants the maggots were falling on her head. Ugh. I turned around and they were wiggling around on the seat.”

When the plane landed, passengers disembarked, the cabin was cleaned and the offending suitcase was put in a bag to burn, according to the Daily Mail, although it was not clear if the owner of the luggage was penalized. Travelers received 8,000 air miles, compensation for a hotel room and a $30 meal ticket for overnight delays, the outlet reported.

Delta apologized, according to WJBK, and said passengers were put on the next flight available.
