DETROIT, MI – Friends and family of slain Western Michigan University and Detroit native Damond Carpenter gathered for a candlelight vigil on Wednesday evening. The vigil took place near the site where he was gunned down at Morang Avenue and Cadieux Road last Friday.

According to reports, Carpenter was driving in the 10400-block of Cadieux when he passed another car, whose passenger began shooting. Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene, and two other people were wounded in the attack, according to a report in the Detroit News.

Police told the Detroit News that it appeared Carpenter was not the intended target of the shooting, which remains under investigation.
