ESPN Reports Lions Tackle C.J. Mosley Suspended for Smoking Pot

The mystery surrounding C.J. Mosley's suspension may be over after reports he disconnected hotel smoke alarm and was caught smoking pot.

Detroit Lions defensive tackle C.J. Mosley was suspended for two weeks after he was caught with marijuana at the team’s posh hotel in London last weekend, ESPN said Sunday, citing anonymous sources.

The sports network said Lions coach Jim Caldwell hasn’t explained why Mosely was sent home from London on Oct. 25, but reported its sources confirmed hotel security guards were alerted to a smoke alarm that had been disconnected in Mosley’s room, where he was discovered with marijuana.

The team’s substance abuse policy prescribes suspensions in alleged infractions such as Mosley’s, but still to be answered is whether he can be docked two weeks’ pay. Mosely and the NFL Players Association argue in a grievance that he should be paid during the suspension.

The Detroit News reports the Lions could take some heat for handling the issue internally. Disciplinary action for marijuana-related offenses properly rests with the NFL, according to the report.

The suspension took place on the eve of the Lions game against the Atlanta Falcons, which the Lions won in dramatic fashion, 22-21 last Sunday.

The Lions have declined comment on the matter, and news organizations say Mosley also has not returned phone calls.
