Edina Boys Hockey Team Wins Consolation Bracket At State Tourney

The Hornets took down Moorhead High School 3-2 in overtime Saturday to win the Class AA state consolation final.

EDINA, MN — The Edina High School boys hockey team bounced back from a disappointing loss in the Class AA state tournament to win the consolation final.

Edina fell 5-2 to Maple Grove on Thursday in the opening round of the state tournament, dropping the Hornets into the consolation bracket at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Less than 24 hours after its defeat in the quarterfinals, the Edina boys hockey team dusted itself off and ran out as 4-3 winners Friday over Cretin-Derham High School in its first consolation game.

Sophomore forward Jackson Nevers and senior forward Willy Johnson scored to tie the game after the Hornets fell behind 2-0 in the second period, according to the Minnesota State High School League’s report on the game.

Nevers scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give Edina a 3-2 win in the consolation final, meaning the Hornets ended the 2021-22 season as the fifth-best Class AA boys hockey team in Minnesota.
