Edina Hires Experienced Coach to Helm Boys Basketball Team

Joe Burger will start working with the team this summer, during open gym sessions.

Edina High School's boys basketball team has a new leader, as Joe Burger has been named head coach of the Hornets.

Burger works at Minnetonka High School as a student and program supervisor, acting as an attendance dean. He has seven years of coaching experience, at both Minnetonka High School and, recently, at Holy Family Catholic High School.

Burger served as an assistant coach, then later worked as Interim-Head Coach in 2010, then moved to Holy family for the 2010-11 season. He led his team to a conference championship in his first season, and a section 6AAA Final appearance during the 2012-13 season.

"I am honored for the opportunity to lead an already successful basketball program and intend to continue the tradition of Edina athletics in educating student-athletes well beyond just basketball,” Burger said. “I am excited to work with our entire program—youth through high school—and live up to the Edina standard of bringing continued pride to our school, our district and our community."

EHS Assistant Principal Jenny Johnson said the Hornet family is pleased to add Burger to its coaching staff, as he's a great fit to take over the team.

“His experience leading similar programs at the high school level makes him stand out and we’re excited to bring his expertise to the Edina boys basketball program," Johnson said.

The Edina boys basketball team had a tremendous season this year, finishing in third place at the 2013 Class AAAA State Tournament.
