24-Year-Old Man 'Unaccounted For' Dies In Fridley House Fire

What is believed to have been a cooking-related fire killed a man sleeping in an upstairs bedroom.

FRIDLEY, MN — A 24-year-old man died Tuesday after a fire broke out at the house he lived in on Hugo Street in Fridley. The Fridley Fire Department and assisting agencies responded to find that three of the home's occupants made it out safely, but a fourth "was unaccounted for," authorities said.

After the fire was extinguished, the fourth occupant's body was discovered. It was later learned the man was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when the fire began.

Family members identified the victim as DJ Wasserman, KSTP reported. The blaze appears to have been a cooking-related fire.

"My sister Nora, her boyfriend Chijo, and my dad, Al, were also home at the time the fire broke out, but were able to safely get out of the house," Rachel Mae Dolan writes on GoFundMe. "Three dogs also made it out, but Nora lost her beloved dog, Boss, and two guinea pigs. My mom was at work at the time it happened."

"DJ was a great kid who would do anything for anyone who asked. He loved music of all kinds, and enjoyed watching hockey, football, and movies. He was recently promoted at work to a supervisor position. He worked hard, saved his earnings, and had purchased himself a new truck. At only 24 years old, he never planned for funeral expenses. Now, along with losing their son and their home, my parents are faced with the crushing task of planning and paying for an unexpected funeral."
