Anoka County to Celebrate 'Read Across America'

From Anoka County: Children in Anoka County will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the National Education Association's Read Across America Day on Thursday, March 2, 2017.

Now in its 20th year, Read Across America Day celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and the joys of reading. More than 45 million readers are expected to pick up a book and read that day.

All eight Anoka County Library locations will host an event from special storytimes to day-long parties. “Read Across America Day shows how the Library supports early literacy and helping kids read at grade level by third grade,” said Anoka County Library Board President Dan Greensweig. “These events are, like most Library programs, both fun and educational.”

Anoka County librarians will partner with Anoka/Washington County Head Start to visit children at the Family Development Center in Coon Rapids and other Head Start locations. “The Anoka County Library system is an asset to Anoka/Washington County Head Start-Early Head Start Program,” said Monica Torgerson, Child Development Services Coordinator. “They provide knowledge and activities that are available in the areas where the families live.

In addition to Head Start, librarians will also reach out to children with visits to programs and schools in the Anoka-Hennepin School, Centennial, and Fridley districts to help get kids excited about reading and further strengthen community partnerships.
