Fridley 2015 Year in Review

A countdown of favorite blogs and places to visit in Fridley.

Since I was deterred by another topic (Auld Lang Syne) when I sat down to write my official ”end-of-the-year blog”, I thought I would be tardy and share my (intended) lists of top three places to visit, and blogs. I can write like a fiend and I enjoy it, but honestly, most of it is non-sense or otherwise insignificant. But every year there are always a few blogs that I deem important either personally, or because I think the topic is worthy for discussion.

Fridley has the reputation of being an industrial, blue collar city. We pride ourselves in our small town, Midwestern culture, in staying true to our traditions and perspectives. Not bad things, but one of the challenges of living in our Comfort Zone at all times is that we can often miss out on the hidden jewels of people and places (usually right in front of our eyes!). Even though we are traditionalists, Fridley also has a lot innovative events and reinvented businesses. Case in point; one of the best things that I thought came into town in 2015 was TEDx Fridley (I could barely contain myself!). To be in-the-know for future events, be sure to peek at our City Website from time to time.

TOP THREE BLOGS

3) The Dolezal Identity. We all remember the explosion of Rachel Dolezal in the media, right? White woman “passing as black” while she was the President of a Washington chapter of NAACP. This fascinated me-- for reasons that may surprise you. My blog talks about my personal thoughts about identity and race. It’s a topic we can all join the conversation on, and I hope my blog gave others a chance to think about.

2) Face Value. Social Media, specifically Facebook is entrenched in our culture. For years experts have published articles warning us about the ill-effects of this medium. I am an active contributor having 1,500+ “friends” (which is actually considered a low number by anyone who is serious about growing a following). But what does this really mean to me? Why do I do it and see value in it? Do you agree or disagree?

1) The Greatest Love. By far, one of my most personal blogs to date. Being so personal, this was extremely difficult to first write, then to publish. But it’s a topic I had wanted to write about for years and chickened out every time... Besides being highly personal, it was also difficult to try and sift through a lifetime of feelings and experiences to make a story that would make sense, showcased the points I wanted—and not turn into a blubbering mess while writing it.

What I loved best about The Greatest Love (besides having the gumption to click the publish button), was the truly amazing conversations I was able to have with others after posting. There were some friends who shared adoption with me that I had no idea did, and conversely there were friends who had known me for years and never knew I was adopted. Being a blogger (often) gives me the opportunity to have conversations with people I care about. I am always incredibly thankful for this!

TOP THREE PLACES IN FRIDLEY YOU SHOULD VISIT

3) Crooner’s Lounge and Supper Club. Crooner’s (formerly known as the Shorewood, formerly known as the Crab House, formerly known as Something Else) the building has had many reincarnations. If you live or work by Fridley you’ve probably been there at some point during one of its lives. If it’s been a time since you’ve been there, I highly recommend you check it out. Now, I am biased as a lover of the arts. The fact that they curate some pretty amazing talent that I can listen to live in my neck of the woods gets me very excited (exposure to live jazz music is truly a special treat). They’ve added onto our music enjoyment by installing an historic piano into their dining area (that’s next on my list to check out). They brought in a new chef who makes even the simplest sandwich or salad a delight to eat. The food and cocktail quality is excellent. Some of their menu prices are higher than we’re use to in Fridley, but I assure you, they have many less expensive options that are delicious and you’d be hard pressed to find a better Happy Hour.

2) Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts. That charming two story white house you whiz by on East River Road? Yes, you should most definitely check it out. Under the leadership of Executive Director Bethany Whitehead, programs in visual and literary arts are plentiful and intriguing. They have a gift shop showcasing local artisans, and offer numerous free literary readings and gallery openings throughout the year. Oh yeah, and they offer free space to the community for your next: Book club, seminar or volunteer committee meeting.

1) Springbrook Nature Center. Springbrook is expanding! Closed and under construction until late Spring, our own Springbrook has become the Como Zoo of the North. Many of you have attended their famous Pumpkin Night. They transform their grounds into a magical night forest; hundreds of jack-o-lanterns lighting miles of beautiful trails... This event alone attracts thousands every year from all over the Twin Cities. But their real passion is education, along with the appreciation and protection of nature. Their programs are for ages from pre-school to 100, offering a variety of options from animal feedings and snowshoeing hikes, to bird banding. My children have both participated in their summer camps as well as have had private birthday parties there. Want to be part of the next phase? Join me and my family and DONATE a little-- for a lot in return for the next generation.
