Turning Lemons into Lemonade

You won't believe what this local Fridley girl has done.

Imagine. You wake up on any given day to get ready for work. You might hit the snooze button once—or twice—then shuffle your way to the kitchen for some coffee while you check your phone for the latest news. You might select your clothes for the day, brush your teeth. As you reach for your toothbrush, without warning your body overtakes you in an uncontrollable, massive seizure. Although you are technically still conscious, you experience a kind of black out. When you recover, you are disoriented, sore, and exhausted unsure if minutes or hours have gone by.

This is the kind of morning Kayla Borman has experienced starting at the age of five. Since being diagnosed with Epilepsy, she and her family have been living with seizures, often multiple times a day. But these lemons haven’t stopped her from raising funds and awareness for the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota.

Now at nineteen, Kayla has raised over $30,000 for the EFMN. For the past seven years she sets up an annual lemonade stand in front of Schaaf Floral in conjunction with a website to collect donations. You can find her there this Saturday, August 27th from 11:00-3:00pm along with Kayla’s Krew and her loyal companion, Sir Winston. All funds raised will go to the EFMN Rise Above Seizures Walk which will be held on Sept. 24th.
