"It’s so senseless the victim was shot to death over such a trivial matter," said Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena in a statement. "Deadly gun violence has no place in our communities, neighborhoods or at our places of work. My condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Cariif."

Lakeville police responded to the Amazon warehouse parking lot just after 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Hared, Cariif, and a third man had carpooled to work that day, according to investigators.

Hared — who has a permit to carry firearms — brought along a gun that was equipped with a flashlight attachment, police said.

The gun was left in the car while the three men went to work, according to the criminal complaint.

During a break at around 1 a.m., Hared went to the car and noticed the flashlight attachment was missing from his gun, police said. Hared accused the two other men of stealing it, according to prosecutors.

At about 4 a.m., the three men took another break and went to the car to look for the attachment, authorities said.

Hared continued to accuse the two men which they both denied taking it, according to the criminal complaint.

Moments later, Hared and Cariif got into two separate physical altercations, police said.

During the second fight, Hared pulled out his gun while Cariif tried to force it out of his hand, according to prosecutors.

Hared fired his gun and the bullet struck a nearby unoccupied vehicle, police said.

The two men yelled at Hared, "Don’t shoot," but Hared then fired his gun, hitting Cariif, according to the criminal complaint.

Cariif was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death as a homicide.
