NAD Youth Leadership Camp (YLC)

National Association for the Deaf Youth Leadership Camp

My name is Corrie Ballentine. I am 16 years old and attends Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf in Faribault, Minnesota. I am deaf and use sign language as a way to communicating with others and we use sign language to communication at home. This summer, I want to attends Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) program. They have deaf program for a month in Stayton, Oregon. I have heard many stories about this camp and I feel I would benefit a valuable learning experience by meeting others like me! The program fee is $3000.00. I am trying to raise money so that I can go to camp.

YLC’s mission is to provides campers the ability to develop their scholarship, leadership, and citizenship qualities in nature environment.Campers experience self-discovery, learn about self-identity, confidence, and self-esteem and understand many things about themselves. The camp believes being outdoor has an amazing way of inspiring campers. YLC used old Chinese proverb: "Tell me, and I'll forget. Show me, and I'll remember. Involve me, and I'll learn." This dynamic camp program builds character and promotes a lifetime of healthy activities and relationships with others. This highly popular program has graduated over 2,500 alumni in its 43 years of existence. This, in turn, contributes to a network of successful alumni. Many of these alumni have become successful leaders and advocates for the deaf and hard of hearing community, including businessmen and women, teachers, professors, lawyers, doctors, NAD board members, and employees. NAD YLC is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.
