Weekend Getaway Series: Maine

Maine offers plenty of things to do on a weekend getaway along the coast. Travelers who take Route 1 north will find a variety of accommodations and attractions. Kennebunkport is a few miles east of Route 1. People who spend the first night of their trip at the Sandy Pines Maine Campground here can stay in the Glamp Tent Village. The tents here have 430 square feet of space. Campers are provided with beds and bedding. Other accommodations at Sandy Pines include carriages and huts. There is a general store at the campground.

The Portland Head Light next to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth is approximately 33 miles north of Kennebunkport. Travelers can stretch their legs by exploring the beach here. They can enjoy a taste of Maine by dining on lobster rolls from one of the food vendors in the park.

The city of Portland is just 5 miles northwest of Portland Head Light. Visitors can spend the afternoon touring the city’s breweries or visiting Portland’s many other attractions.

A 17-mile drive north from Portland will bring visitors to the town of Freeporton Maine’s middle coast. Lobster is on the dinner menus of some of the restaurants here. Italian, Chinese and a variety of other cuisines are also available. Tired travelers can spend the night at one of Freeport’s hotels, inns or bed and breakfasts. They can start the next day by having breakfast in one of Freeport’s cafes. The morning can be spent shopping in downtown Freeport or exploring the large L.L. Bean store. Visitors who enjoy hiking can pick up some equipment here if they want to hike through Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park. There are places in the park for a picnic lunch.

A 20-mile drive from the state park along Route 1 will take travelers to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Museum visitors can learn about schooners and clipper ships. There are more museums in Rockland. Travelers can spend some time in the afternoon wandering through the museums and art galleries.

A drive of 9 miles will take visitors to Camden where they can take a cruise on the Penobscot Bay. Dinner at a Camden restaurant overlooking the water is a great way to end a coastal weekend getaway.
