MINNEAPOLIS — Former President Donald Trump remains in a "virtual dead heat" with President Joe Biden, according to a new poll.

Biden leads Trump 44 percent to 42 percent, according to the latest KSTP-TV/SurveyUSA poll published Tuesday.

KSTP's poll results are identical to the one it took back in April, showing Trump's resilience even as his salacious "hush money" trial continues.

"This race is close," Carleton College political analyst Steven Schier told KSTP of the poll.

"It has been for several months. It’s come as a surprise, I think, to a lot of people in national politics. The Trump campaign now sees Minnesota as a real likely target for victory in the 2024 election."

No Republican presidential candidate has won Minnesota's ten electoral votes since Richard Nixon won the state in 1972

However, Trump came close in 2016, falling by just 1.5 percent to Hillary Clinton. But Biden beat Trump by more than 7 percentage points when he sought a second term.

Trump will spend the break from his New York "hush money" trial campaigning in Minnesota. He is set to speak Friday night at the Minnesota GOP's annual Lincoln-Reagan fundraising dinner in St. Paul.
