8 Shot In South Minneapolis, Sound Of Automatic Gunfire Reported

Six of the eight people shot early Sunday evening were teenagers, according to Minneapolis police.

MINNEAPOLIS — Eight people were wounded by gunfire near a busy south Minneapolis intersection early Sunday evening, according to police. All are expected to survive. No arrests have been made.

"There were reports of individuals running from the scene who may have been suspects," the Minneapolis Police Department said in a news release.

"Investigators are working to identify all who were involved and what transpired. As in all investigations, all possible motives will be considered by investigators."

Just before 6 p.m., Metro Transit police near East Franklin Avenue and Chicago Avenue South heard the sound of automatic gunfire. Transit officers and Minneapolis officers from the Third Precinct responded to the scene.

Three men with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds were found in front of the Minneapolis Market on Franklin Avenue. Officers treated the men with tourniquets. A fourth man in the area suffered a graze wound.

All four were transported by ambulances to Hennepin Healthcare, according to a news release.

A juvenile male arrived at the nearby Children’s Minnesota Hospital with a gunshot wound.

Two other men and a woman later arrived at Hennepin Healthcare with gunshot wounds.

The ages of the gunshot victims were identified as:

  • A 15-year-old male
  • Three 16-year-old males
  • One 17-year-old male
  • One 18-year-old male
  • One 45-year-old female
  • One 48-year-old male

Forty-one shell casings were found at the scene, police said. The casings were from three different calibers, including .223-caliber rounds, according to investigators. A house in the area was damaged by gunfire.

Officers from all Minneapolis precincts, as well as Minneapolis Park Police, Hennepin County Sherriff’s Office, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to help with crowd management, scene security, and investigations.
