9 Arrested In Unrest Sparked By Uptown Deputy Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS — Nine people were arrested in the civil unrest sparked by a deadly shooting in Minneapolis that involved two local county deputies. Minneapolis police were not involved in the shooting.

A Hennepin County sheriff's deputy and a Ramsey County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man on the top level of a parking ramp at 1405 West Lake Street just after 2 p.m., according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

A crowd of onlookers and protesters quickly grew near the scene of the shooting Thursday afternoon. Overnight, "numerous" buildings were vandalized and looted in response to the fatal shooting, according to Minneapolis police.

"As nighttime and darkness came, looting and assaultive actions against the police began to take hold," police said. "Many buildings in the area sustained damage and some were looted."

The arrests were related to arson, riot, weapons, and property damage violations.

Officers did not use gas or marking rounds during the unrest, according to police. Officers "did receive permission but utilized other non-lethal mechanisms for crowd dispersal," the department said.

Protesters set a dumpster on fire, KSTP reported.

Windows at the Lake Street CVS were smashed in and the inside of the store was vandalized, according to the Star Tribune. The nearby Lake Street Tires Plus was also vandalized the newspaper reported.

A federal task force at the center of the shooting

The two deptuties who fired their weapons were working as part of a United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force Thursday. The task force was alerted to the location of a man who had a warrant for a felony firearms violation, according to the BCA.

At one point, the man fired his weapon from inside a car before he was killed, according to the bureau. A woman who was in the car at the time was treated for minor injuries from glass debris.

There were no other injuries reported.

The fatal shooting happened hours after city workers began clearing the barriers at George Floyd Square Thursday morning.
