Driver On Drugs Strikes Minivan, Kills Mother Of 2: Police

Family members identified the deceased minivan driver as Emily Gerding, 34, a mother of two young daughters.

ROBBINSDALE, MN — One man was arrested with charges pending after he fleed police in a Tesla before crashing into a bystander's minivan Saturday night, killing the driver and injuring the passenger, according to authorities. Police believe the man was on drugs at the time of the crash.

Family members identified the deceased minivan driver as Emily Gerding, 34, a mother of two young daughters. Her husband — a passenger in the minivan— survived but is being treated at North Memorial in a medically-induced coma.

"John and Emily (née Darmer) worked as special education teachers at a local middle school," reads a GoFundMe page.

"They were about to celebrate their 7th wedding anniversary in August. Emily would have celebrated her 35th birthday later this month. She was busy planning the party for Eleanor's upcoming 3rd birthday this month as well."

According to police, at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, a Robbinsdale officer spotted a Tesla driving 55 miles per hour on eastbound 42nd Avenue as it crossed Highway 100. The driver was wearing a face "ninja-style" mask, according to police.

When the officer tried to catch up and make a traffic stop, the Tesla sped away through side streets.

The officer ended the chase, but the Tesla continue to speed, going up to 90 mph before crashing into the minivan at North Orchard and 36th avenues, the Star Tribune reported.
