Germantown Police Shoot, Kill Person On Middle School Roof

GERMANTOWN, WI — The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating after a police officer shot and killed someone Monday evening on a middle school roof.

At the time of the shooting, up to 70 students were inside the school, according to authorities.

Just after 6:30 p.m., officers from the Germantown Police Department responded to a report of a person "acting erratically" in the parking lot of Kennedy Middle School.

When police arrived, the person climbed onto the roof of the school and led three officers on a foot chase, investigators said.

The person then fired at the officers. The officers returned fire and struck him, according to authorities.

The person was given emergency aid but died at the scene, investigators said. Their identity has not been released.

"No other members of the public or law enforcement were injured during the incident," DOJ officials said. "This is believed to be an isolated incident and there no danger to the public.

No part of the incident occurred inside the building, authorities noted. Parents reunited with their students at nearby MacArthur Elementary.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on standard administrative leave, per agency policy.

The DOJ will review the case and turn over its investigative findings to the Washington County District Attorney when complete.
