7-Year-Old Minneapolis Girl Killed While Riding Bike

The girl was biking from her driveway into the street when she was struck by an SUV, Minneapolis police said.

MINNEAPOLIS — The girl who died Monday after she was struck by an SUV while riding her bike in south Minneapolis was identified as 7-year-old Penelope Wender Thompson.

At about 8:30 a.m., officers from the 3rd Precinct responded to reports of a crash near the 5600 block of 2nd Avenue South. Thompson was found unconscious in the street.

She was transported to Hennepin Healthcare by emergency responders. "Despite all life-saving efforts, she died at the hospital," police said. Thompson was declared deceased just after 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the preliminary investigation, Thompson was riding her bicycle off the home's driveway into the street when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

The driver immediately pulled over and stopped to help, police said. No criminality is suspected, according to investigators.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said the cause of death was "multiple blunt force injuries due to bicycle versus sport utility vehicle collision" and the manner of death was an accident.
