Nixon, who served as governor for two terms, has been a long-time advocate of parks and trails in the state. Under his leadership, seven new parks were added to the state parks system and the Katy Trail was expanded.

“Jay’s passion for the outdoors, conservation and enhancing parks and trails across the state makes him a natural choice for the Great Rivers Greenway board,” said Dr. Page.

In 2015, Nixon, along with then-Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, received the Sheldon Coleman Great Outdoors Award.

“I thank County Executive Page for this opportunity to serve the region,” Nixon said. “This great organization is prepared to help meet the growing demand for trails in this region. Whether for recreation, exercise or to just enjoy the outdoors, the pandemic has highlighted the need and opportunity for outside activities.”

The 12-member Great Rivers Greenway board oversees the tax-supported trail district, funded by St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. Each member serves a three-year term.
