NEW JERSEY — This past week, you may have thought that you left your front door and stepped directly inside a sauna. But no, that was just the latest heat wave to hit New Jersey.

High heat and high humidity mixed to provide an incredibly unpleasant atmosphere for most of the state, except those lucky enough to be at the Jersey Shore.

Weekend storms will provide a temporary reprieve from this heat wave, but the bad news is a new one might start at the beginning of next week, according to forecasters.

The latest heat wave came after the second-hottest June on record in New Jersey, according to David Robinson, the state's climatologist.

Many areas found themselves under heat advisories, which is when maximum heat index temperatures (how hot it actually feels, combining air temperatures with humidity levels) are expected to be at least 100 degrees for at least two days, and nighttime air temperatures won't get below 75 degrees. Other parts of the state were under excessive heat warnings, which is similar to an advisory, but is issued when maximum heat index temperatures are expected to be at least 105 degrees. And if you spent any time at all outside during the heat wave you probably felt that.

It's also been incredibly dry, despite the crazy amount of moisture in the air. Much of the state is "abnormally dry" and some areas even reaching "moderate drought" level, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
