NEW JERSEY — Ten New Jersey Stop & Shop supermarkets will close as part of the chain's strategy to "position the company for growth," according to a news release.

The chain will shutter 32 stores across the Northeast. The supermarket chain initially announced plans to close stores in May.

"Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand," Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a news release.
