Asbury Park-Neptune Thanksgiving Classic Cancelled Due To Threats

Thursday's event would have been the 90th holiday football game between the two districts.

ASBURY PARK, NJ - The 90th annual Thanksgiving Day football classic between Asbury Park and Neptune high schools has been postponed, according to the school district's website.

The game was postponed "due to unforeseen circumstances," and will be held at a later mutually agreeable date, the website states.

"We want to give the kids an opportunity to have the game, but safety comes first,'' Asbury Schools Superintendent Lamont Repollet said.

While the website doesn't go into detail, a report on app.com says the game was cancelled due to "credible, live threats" received by both districts, Repollet said.

"We received information that would have put our students in harms way so we made the decision to postpone," the report states. "We understand the game is vitally important to both communities, but this transcends the football game. There are individuals who want to destroy the spirit of the game."
