ASBURY PARK, NJ – I know what you are thinking, “Another pizza place in Asbury Park?” but Killer Pies, which is scheduled to open sometime in September at the old Trinity and the Pope location, is going to bring back something that has been missing from Asbury since Asbury Pie left: a slice and soda pizza shop.

Co-owners Andrew Mahnken and Dennis Masel want to bring an old-school pizzeria vibe to Asbury Park with Killer Pies. Mahnken, a former GM of the now-closed Brickwall Tavern, feels that there’s a “lost art of pizza” that Killer Pies wants to reclaim.

“There’s a void for a slice shop downtown,” Mahnken, who has been living in Asbury Park for the past 13 years, said.

Another old-school tradition that Mahnken and Masel want to show off at Killer Pies is the art of soda-making, which they plan to do by having their kitchen open-air so guests can see their pizzas and sodas get made by hand.

“We thought it was a fun idea,” Mahnken said. “I think soda is a bit of a lost art as well. So we’re trying to create a bar-like vibe without the alcohol.”

Mahnken and Masel are working with other restaurants to bring different things to Killer Pies, including fresh-made spumoni from Lola’s European Cafe in Asbury Park and a culinary program created by Chris Calabrese of Nettie’s House of Spaghetti.

Killer Pies is scheduled to open in September before Sea.Hear.Now and will be offering a late-night pick-up option as well.
