NEW JERSEY — Forecasters are monitoring a winter storm that could bring snow, ice and rain to New Jersey on Sunday night, packing strong winds and the potential for coastal flooding.

AccuWeather’s early forecast map is calling for 1 to 3 inches of snow across most of the state with 3 to 6 inches expected in the northwestern part of New Jersey.

Though the forecast remains largely uncertain as of Thursday, AccuWeather said noting that a subtle shift off the coast could mean more snow for the Garden State.

“Should the storm manage to drift 50 miles or so off the coast while heading northward, I-95 cities from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, New York City and Boston could be buried in snow with little or no rain and ice mixing in,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bill Deger said.

Under this scenario, New Jersey could see a nor’easter or possibly a blizzard, according to AccuWeather.

The National Weather Service is also increasing its confidence that the area will be impacted by the potent low pressure system late Sunday into Monday. The agency will issue its snowfall prediction maps later this week.

“The latest trend with the models has been for this to take a more inland track,” the agency said. “If this trend continues, that would mean more rain for the I- 95 corridor and coastal plains, while more wintry mix for areas north and west of the I-95 corridor.”

Strong winds and coastal flooding are also a threat with this latest storm system. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph could reach as high as 60 mph along the Jersey Shore, the weather service said.

Both coastal and freshwater flooding are possible, in addition to excessive rainfall, though neither would last long because the potential storm would be fast-moving.

Temperatures are expected to remain seasonable through tomorrow before another arctic plunge hits Friday night through Saturday night.
