Car Overturns In Berkeley Crash; Route 9 Reopens

The driver of the overturned vehicle received summonses for careless driving and unsafe tires, police said.

BERKELEY, NJ — One car overturned in a two-vehicle accident Saturday morning on Route 9. The crash took place at about 11:20 a.m. in the area of TD Bank (430 Route 9).

Police closed off Route 9 for about an hour as it rained heavily in the area. A black Chevy Cruze overturned in the northbound lane or Route 9. The driver of the second vehicle — a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee — pulled into the TD Bank parking lot after their vehicle sustained damage.

Ryan Downie, 33, of Toms River, drove the car that overturned. He received summonses for careless driving and unsafe tires, police said.

Berkeley First Aid assessed everyone involved, but they refused further medical attention. The Bayville Fire Department assisted, and Accurate Towing removed both vehicles.

Traffic Enforcement Officer Edward LaGreca is investigating the crash. Anyone with information can contact the Berkeley Township Traffic Safety Division at 732-341-1132 ext. 2125.
