BERKELEY, NJ — A Lacey man was charged after a well-being check resulted in the discovery of various amounts of narcotics, Berkeley police said.

Kyle Comerford, 21, was charged with eluding, obstructing the administration of law, possession of CDS, possession of CDS with the intent to distribute, including seven separate charges for possession of scheduled prescription drugs and possession of cocaine, police said.

Police were called to the Atlantic City Boulevard Quick Chek in Bayville on Oct. 23 shortly after 12 p.m. for a wellbeing check by a "concerned citizen," police said.

The caller told police that a man had come to the gas pumps and appeared to be under the influence, police said, and he was "nodding off" behind the wheel of his truck.

When police arrived, they approached the truck, but Comerford refused to roll his window down or speak with officers, police said.

Berkeley Ptl. Hester noticed Comerford "concealing an unknown object into the area between the front seat and center console" and ordered him out of the vehicle, which he refused, police said.

After several attempts to get him out of the vehicle, Comerford put the truck in reverse and drove into an unoccupied patrol vehicle, damaging it, police said.

Comerford then put the truck into drive, driving over the curb and grass area onto Central Parkway, according to police.

He made a right on Route 9 and headed south towards Lacey, so Lacey police were notified, according to Berkeley police. Shortly after, Comerford was located on Renee Court, police said.

Comerford fled on foot, but was located soon after, police said. Police found a bookbag with "various amounts of narcotics," they said.

Lacey police arrested Comerford with their own charges before transferring him to Berkeley police custody.

Comerford now sits in Ocean County Jail, police said.
