Route 9 Paving Scheduled To Start Next Week In Berkeley

BERKELEY, NJ — Officials with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced that lane closures with alternating traffic will be in effect next week for the milling and paving of Route 9 in Berkeley.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 1, daytime closures will be set up to prepare for paving which is scheduled to take place at night beginning on Thursday, Nov. 4.

The project began in July with curb work and the installation of ADA-compliant ramps. Paving was initially expected to begin in the spring of 2022.

Beginning Monday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt is scheduled to close Route 9 southbound with alternating traffic using the northbound lane.

Work will not be done on Tuesday Nov. 2 for Election Day, but will continue Wednesday, Nov. 3 through Friday, Nov. 5 if needed. The closure is necessary to reset manholes in preparation for repaving the roadway.

Work will begin near Longboat Avenue and progress south to approximately the Bridge over Cedar Creek.

Once work is complete on the southbound lane, the northbound lane will be closed with alternating traffic using the southbound lane from the Bridge over Cedar Creek to Longboat Avenue.

Starting on Thursday, Nov. 4 from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Friday, and continuing Monday through Friday nights for approximately three weeks, the southbound lane on Route 9 is scheduled to be closed with alternating traffic using the northbound lane for milling and paving.

Work will begin near Longboat Avenue and progress south to approximately the Bridge over Cedar Creek. Once work is complete on the southbound lane, the northbound lane will be closed with alternating traffic using the southbound lane from the Bridge over Cedar Creek to Longboat Avenue.

Paving is expected to be completed before Thanksgiving.

The work is part of a $9.1 million improvement project that includes lighting, construction of ADA compliant curbs and ramps, sidewalks, milling and paving of approximately eight miles of Route 9 between Jones Road, Lacey and Longboat Avenue, Beachwood.

Traffic signals will also be upgraded at 13 intersections. The project is anticipated to be complete by fall 2022.
