Rutgers Master Gardeners to Offer Spring Gardening Workshop

Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County invites Bernardsville and Bedminster to its Spring Gardening Workshop on Saturday, March 11.

From Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Somerset County: Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County is inviting the public to its Spring Gardening Seminar/Workshop on Saturday March 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the NJAES Rutgers Cooperative Extension Office at 310 Milltown Rd. in Bridgewater.

The three-part seminar, Vegetable Gardening 101, 102 and “Home Composting with Red Wiggler Worms” (Vermicomposting) will run from 9:00am – 12:00pm. An optional build-a-worm bin workshop will run from 12:00pm - 1:00pm.

In Vegetable Gardening 101, Linda Lewis, a certified Rutgers Master Gardener in Somerset County, will address how to take your plot from bare ground or grass to workable, rich soil.

Vegetable Gardening 102, also presented by a certified Rutgers Master Gardener, Lorna Fletcher, will cover planting your crops, maintaining, inspecting and treating for problems, as well as when and how to harvest.

In “Home Composting with Red Wiggler Worms,” Joe Gyurian, Rutgers Cooperative Extension Horticulturist, will explain an effective, odorless way to transform kitchen vegetable scraps into nutrient-packed worm compost with the help of hard-working red wiggler worms. After the seminars, there is an optional hands-on workshop to turn a plastic bin that will be supplied into a cozy home for the worms.

The cost for all three presentations is just $30. The cost to make a worm bin is an additional $35, which includes the bin, worm bedding and a supply of worms. Space is limited. You must pre-register to participate. Go here to download the registration form. The deadline to register is March 8th.
